  1. Google+ or Google Plus?
    G Plus

We say Google Plus but most people abbreviate it to G+

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  2. In less than 10 words what actually is G+?

New ways of sharing, across all of Google …

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  3. In more than 10 words what does this actually mean?

Fully owned and developed Google product,  which was launched in the summer of 2011.  Google themselves describe this product as a ‘social layer’,  which differentiates itself from the single site approach of other social media platforms.   Google aims to make this platform an overarching ‘layer’ covering its entire online portfolio. Google’s is using G+as their challenge against Facebook, Yammer and (salesforce.com) Chatter

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  4. Sounds great, can I install my own copy on G+ on my servers?

No, this is a pure cloud based solution, which operates exclusively on Google networked of servers.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  5. Do I need a Google account?
    Google account google road G+

Absolutely, you need to have a Google account or GMAIL.  Remember, Google wants to securely identify you and improve the way you interact with their products.  You need to link your Google account with the +You icon on the Google.com web site or alternatively go directly on this link https://plus.google.com/up/accounts/upgrade/  You will be guided through three easy steps to complete the ‘Social layer’.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  6. Is it secure?

Google goto to extraordinary lengths to make their solutions safe and secure.  For example your data will be ‘fragmented’ and stored over many Google networks and servers.  We strongly recommend the use of complex passwords, and where possible use UPPER and lower characters, numbers and maybe the odd punctuation mark!

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  7. Ok, where I my data actually stored?

There is a full Google statement on privacy here http://www.google.com/policies/privacy/faq/ . Google is a full cloud based system and and store data in many locations.  This makes solutions both more secure and robust.

  8. G+ is yet another Google product, which is trying hard to catch up with other social media tools. Why bother?

Google have taken a different approach to other social media platforms, in a relatively short period there are already in excess of 500 million users.   The concepts used are very natural with things such as circles for organising friends or groups and video hangouts.   G+ is a very active community,  with registered users versus active users at a really healthy human level.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  9. Could I use G+ like a company intranet?

Company intranets tend to be a collection of fairly static things which people find useful to get their work done, resources, procedures, contacts and such like...  Google Sites is a better feature match if this is what you require.  However, G+ in a company environment (if you are already using Apps for business) adds the dynamic and interaction layer (AKA Social) that is lacking in the stable intranet world.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  10. Is G+ really free?

As an individual this product is free.  Currently this product offers some additional functionality, security and controls if you are a licensed (fee paying) Google Apps for business user.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  11. Anyone actually using G+ (really)?

The product is attracting lots and lots of new users every day.   Currently there are over 500 million users.  The percentage of registered users versus people using it on a regular basis is better than many of its competitors.

  12. How do I activate G+?

    See question 5

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  13. What is all this +1 stuff about?

When you make an announcement or see something that particularly catches your eye then you simply +1 it.   This indicates all parties your liking.  Google uses this trend items and display very popular and trending items.  You will increasingly see this icon on web sites

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  14. Does Google read my posts and +1’s on Plus?

Humans read, computers scan for things. Yes, Google will scan your public posts to understand your interests and promote similar items. This is very similar to using the public version of the web based email client.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  15. Can I msg more that 140 characters?

For sure, you can include links to other web sites, pictures, video and so on.  The richer the media the better.   Remember Google wants to tie up all their services so you get the benefits of this integrated approach.   We still enjoy short and punchy comms....

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  16. I love SMS, can I receive update alerts and make posts using this?

There are other perhaps better technologies such as the mobile apps, but YES you can use SMS. Go into G+ setting or https://www.google.com/settings/plus and complete the form.  You will get a verification code send by SMS, put this in the screen.

If you want to send SMS alerts then tick the above and make a note of the mobile number - send to this for status updates.  Note Standard message & data rates apply for the SMS sent to the Google+ number. Please check with your carrier for SMS charges.

There are lots of options for SMS notifications,  carefully select the ones you want.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  17. Advertisments: how do I minimise these?

Well Google needs revenue from all this great tech. You can minimise some advertising by carefully selecting  the options in your Google Plus setting (that wee cog on the right hand side of the screen) Or use https://www.google.com/settings/plus . Select the options you require,  these are selected by default.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  18. Can I control the way people interact with my G+ posts ?

We recommend you start by controlling who you might want to see your posts and interact with. There are some useful options within Google + to control this under settings (the cog on the right hand top of the screen).

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  19. What is the equivalent of a hashtag in G+?

This is easy it is a hashtag.  Simply put #whatever into you post and it will be tagged.

You will see that after the first space the hashtag will change background and text colour.

You can now search for this hashtag in the search box - remember to use the actual #badJoke though......

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  20. Can I edit / delete posts after I make them ?

Click on the little drop down edit menu and you can edit or delete your own posts - even if someone has already commentated on it.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  21. These hangout things,  is it not just video conferencing under another name?

Absolutely and more.  You can video, voice, screen share and much more.  Just click the hangout button on the right hand of the screen and invite away.  People will need a Google account  linked to + account to fully participate.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  22. Can I schedule a hangout?

That is a great idea and Google introduced this feature directly into the calendar.  Participants will get an e-mail alert when the scheduled time approaches.  This contains the direct link for the call.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  23. How do I get more than 10 people on a Hangout?

Google currently place a limit of 15 people on a Hangout.  This is probably because of the compute power required. You can invite as many as you want,  but only the first 15 will get connected.  However you can extend and broadcast the hangout using "Click on the Enable Hangouts on Air" feature.  This feature can broadcast and record the hangout directly to youtube.   Be careful on the security though,  you might not want the entire world watching you call.  Air subscribers can only listen.

For paid for business apps users this air  feature is enabled in the manage control panel.  If it is not enabled you will a message such as Hangouts On Air is disabled by the domain administrator.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  24. What is the free preview of new premium Google+ features thing?

Google  always looking to add new features and have decided to test some new premium features.  So if you are a paying customer you get your administrator to enable this feature in your manage control panel.

You can preview Google+ premium features for Google Apps for Business, Education, and Government for free through the end of 2013. These features make it even easier for your users to share and collaborate with each other, while ensuring that confidential information stays inside your organization. http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2701307

Note,  support for this is limited as it not currently considered a core product within apps.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  25. Can I control who sees posts?

For business users you can make posts only available to your domain,  this keeps things nice and private.  See item 24 to enable further controls.  You can secure posts to any G+ member or extend them to circles.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  26. What is a circle?

Before G+ was called plus it was called Google circles.   Today the circles metaphor relates to a collection of  people (the must be G+ users).  It is very natural like a circle of friends.  People in circles will not know the name of the circle or the identity of other people in the circle - so this is not the same as a group who will know the name and members.

We recommend creating a work circle e.g. WorkChums and calling this something different to the domain as it will make enforcing controls and following circles simpler.

  27. Will G+ make me a happier and better connected individual?

    Yes, No, Maybe.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  28. Got any recommendations for individuals, circles, communities or whatever that would kick start my relationship with Google +

  29. Do I have to use the chrome web browser to access G+?

There is no requirement to use the chrome web browser,  but why not give it a go ?  It is fast and secure and you will learn to love it just like us.   Check out http://steegle.us6.list-manage1.com/subscribe?u=8c610d8843601a5629f08b6cb&id=faf67385f9 - we occasionally run competitions to win chromebooks ….

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  30. I have multiple Google accounts, it gets confusing. Help.

Google displays your name to make it easy for us to read and add to circles etc. It is easy to switch between multiple accounts by using the icon on Google bar,  but you can find situations where you have added someone work address to a friends circle and so on.  We recommend adding a picture to your profile - a nice formal one for work and perhaps a more abstract or casual one for other Google accounts. You can also include your company details on your profile.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  31. Circles look interesting,  but are they essential and useful?

Circles is key to G+ and getting better and more relevant connections. A really great way to organise stuff.  See question 26.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  32. Can I change what I see in ‘my stream’?

The More drop down list at the drop of the screen will give a list of the circles you have.  It is a good idea to have work circle which is slightly different to the company domain if you have a business account.

You will also see Family and Acquaintances as separate items - these are pre-defined Circles and you can add people into here as required.  There is also a slide bar to the right of this menu which allows you to control the length of the messages displayed ot you - we like lots of items so have this pretty much fully extended.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  33. Hot streams - eh?

When you click on explore you will get a selection of the current trending items on G+

You can control the amount of stream by using the slider to the right of the Home icon.

We recommend you plus and comment and things so that you begin to get more involved in the social layer of Google +

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  34. Can I follow my Company Domain?

Not currently. The best you can do is to add employees to a circle and then filter on the circle.  We would love the functionality to follow our company domain and have asked Google very nicely to consider this functionality.  You can however post comments to be visible and secured to the company domain.....  this will change to Green and cannot be shared outside the company users.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  35. Can I import my contacts from other social media web sites?

There is no easy way to extract contacts directly.  As soon as a mechanisms gets known about it gets blocked by these other providers.   Importing contacts into Google,  but it is really is a challenge getting your contacts out from these other providers.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  36. I have just been ‘tagged’ - what does this mean?

Ah, someone in your domain or circles has identified you in a picture you have made available.  This is a good thing,  but you can restrict people who can tag you in the G+ photo settings.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  37. Can I hide my identity on G+?

Google prefers you to use your real name.  It is possible to put a nick name into your profile,  but it Google reserves the right to review and display.  You can limit who can contact you on Google + within the profile settings page.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  38. Search does not work as I expect in G+ … why?

To get a more refined search put the term into the text box and then you will get a filter menu which narrow the scope further.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  39. Can G+ be used on mobile devices?

Google have written excellent free apps for both Apple and Android devices.  There is a richer look and feel and we love it.  Check out the marketplace and download.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

You can post questions and support other users on the Google + forums http://support.google.com/plus/

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  41. Is there an app or widget for G+ to install on my computer?

There are several search gadgets available for both windows and macs,  but notihng quite the like the mobile apps that Google has developed.  We actually love the web version of Google apps, particularly on our chromebooks.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  42. Are there any G+ tutorials?

There are quite a few out there,  but we tend to think that G+is best learnt through direct experience rather than just watching a video.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  43. Are communities really useful?

This is a recent addition to Google +.  So far we like it and it feels like a natural extension to have interest and behavior based sharing and discovery. Will it replace circles ?  Nah, circles are about collections of people and communities are more subject oriented.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  44. How often is G+ updated and how do I find out about new features ?

Google release hundreds  of releases each year,  some small fixes and then some large releases like communities.    We keep an eye on http://googleblog.blogspot.co.uk/ and http://support.google.com/plus/ to hunt cool new stuff.

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

Google allows you to extract certain bits of your personal data.   Go into your Google account and select download your data.

You can delete your Google plus account and data by using the Account Management deletion options.  But why would you want to do that?

    Back to the Google+ FAQs

  46. What is a Google + event?

Just another little addition to G+ you can invite company domains that you are part, of individuals or even circles. Creating an event gives participants the option to upload pictures and posts etc.If you are using a Google calendar it will helpfully populate this as well as well as your G+ stream and upcoming events - how great is that!
