  1. What is Google Photos?

    Released in May 2015, Google Photos is the unlimited photos and videos storage service.  The app is available free on Google Play and Apple iTunes store. Google Play aim to collect every image shot by the user into a single place, thus making them organized and searchable.  It offers users a secure and private way to share and backup their photographs at a single destination.

    Yes, Google Photos is a free app available for Android and iOS devices. The app is available for smartphones and tablets.

  3. How to get started with Google Photos?

    First, you need to install the Google Photos app on your smartphone or tablet.  Download for iOS or Android. or visit photos.google.com.

    After installing the app, use the device camera to take some photographs. 

    Next, open the Google Photos app to see all your photos and videos on your device.  Turn on Backup and sync feature to synchronize all the photos in the library.

  4. What are the media file types supported by Google Photos?

    Google Photos supports various file types to store images and videos. It includes following media formats –

    Photographs: 

    JPEG, WEBP, GIF, CRW, CR2, NEF, DNG, ORF, RAF, ARW, PEF, SRW, RW2, BMP, ICO and TIFF.

    Videos: 

    MPG, MOD, MMV, TOD, WMV, ASF, AVI, DIVX, MOV, M4V, 3GP, 3G2, MP4, M2T, M2TS, MTS and MKV.

  5. How to toggle Back up and Sync setting in Google Photos?

    To change the back up and sync setting:

    • Open Google Photos app on your device.
    • You will find the menu icon on top left side.
    • Tap on Menu and look for Settings.
    • Under Settings, find Back Up and Sync.
    • Use the switch to turn Back Up and Sync on or off.

  7. How to choose a storage size for Google Photos?

    There are two options for library storage to choose from –

    Original Storage

    This option provides a limited free storage up to 15 GB and can be used for storing videos and photos exactly as they are taken. It is the best option for users who want to maintain exact quality of photos taken with DSLR camera. These photos can be used for printing large banners.

    High Quality Storage

    This option provides unlimited storage and is an optimum choice for sharing and printing. Photos and videos are stored in high quality but size is compressed. It is recommended for users who use point-and-shoot cameras or phones having around 16 MP camera.

  8. How are photographs categorized in Google Photos?

    The Photos service by Google can identify different features like faces, skyline, beaches and more. It then categorizes photographs into Places, People and Things. The service further analyzes photographs for similar faces and groups them under the People category. For Places category, the service uses geotagging data and also analyzes pictures for famous landmarks.

  9. How to find just taken photos in Google Photos App?

    Open the Google Photos app on your device. Open the menu using the menu icon present on the left hand side. In the menu, look for Photos.

    The photograph you just took will be visible on the top followed by other photographs.

  10. How to look for old photographs in Google Photos?

    You can easily search for old photos using the Search icon present at the bottom of the screen. Just mention any element (eg. London, cat or others) that is present in particular photograph you are looking for and tap enter. You will come across a list of photographs with that particular tag or element.

  11. Can category of photographs be removed?

    Yes. Users can remove any categorization errors or particular photographs from a category using your smartphone or device. It cannot be done using a laptop or computer. When you remove the photograph from a particular category, it is not deleted from Google Photos library.

  12. How to remove an incorrectly categorized photo or video?

    You can only remove the photos from categories using your device. It cannot be done using a computer. To remove a particular photograph from a category:

    • Open the group from which photographs needs to be removed.
    • Look for Remove Results option using icon present on top right of the screen.
    • Select photographs that you want to remove from the category.
    • Tap on Remove button present on top right corner.

  13. Why can’t I find People section in My Google Photos?

    If you are unable to view People section, it can be due to the following two reasons:

    • This particular feature is unavailable in your country.
    • The setting to Group Similar Faces has been turned off on your device.

  14. Can photographs be uploaded only from smartphones or tablets?

    No. Along with smartphones or tablets, you can also upload photos using Google Chrome browser or other apps like Syncdocs.

  15. Does sharing on Google Photos affect the quality of photographs?

    In free storage, Google Photos supports images up to 16 megapixels. It compresses images but the images are still maintained in high quality. Even 1080p video is stored in 1080p high definition. 15 gigabytes storage space is offered free.

    For full resolution image storage, you can buy storage from Google.  For additional storage space, charges are $10 per month for 1 terabyte storage.

    Images should not exceed 100 megapixels resolution or 75 MB in size. In case of videos, the limit is 10 GB.

  16. What if I am unable to backup photos?

    If you are unable to backup videos and photos on your mobile, it can be due to several reasons. To check the backup status, open Assistant from menu in the Google Photos app.

    If the card says Waiting for Wi-Fi or connection, it means you need to connect to a mobile data of 

    Wi-Fi network. Touch that card to change connection settings.

    If the card says Backup Complete, it means all the photos and videos have already been backed up on the cloud.

    If the card says Back up and Sync Off, toggle the setting using the switch. It will automatically back up photos you click in future.

    If the card says Photo or Video skipped, it means the image or video does not meet upload requirements specified by the app.

  20. How to use filters in Google Photos?

    Google Photos allows users to add filters to their images and change the appeal of their photographs. To add a filter:

    • Select the photo you want to edit from your Google Photos app
    • Click the Pencil icon to start editing the image.
    • When the image opens for editing, there are various options present in the bottom bar.
    • Choose the photo icon to open the filters available in the app.
    • Scroll through various filters.
    • To see how a particular filter looks, tap on it and see its effect on the image.
    • After choosing any particular filter, tap on the checkmark and then SAVE button to save the changes.

    Picasa is a special software program that allows users to edit their digital photographs and organize them. Picasa Web Albums allows users to upload and share their photos online. Photos edited using Picasa or uploaded using Picasa Web Albums can be seen in Google Photos.

    Google Photos automatically syncs photographs while in Picasa, photographs need to be downloaded and then uploaded after editing.

  30. What are key differences between Google Photos and iCloud?

    There is similarity in the way photos are organized in iCloud and Google Photos. In Apple, photos are organized in groups based on time and location of the photograph. Thus, photos taken over the same period of time are sorted by location.

    Google Photos displays photos in a way that it can be clearly seen when they were taken.  You need to pinch to zoom out from a photo. Users can also scroll through the photos by holding, tapping and dragging the sidebar.
