Index the right address (Canonical URL) - classic Google Sites

Does your site appear in Google Search with the sites.google.com address? Set the canonical URL of the site so Google Search knows which URL you want indexed in search results.

For new Google Sites there's no option to set the canonical URL- see Compare classic to new Sites.

Instructions

Personal Google Sites (sites.google.com/site/...)

  1. Sign in to the site you want to set the canonical URL for;

  2. Use the More button then Manage site (or the keyboard shortcut g then m);

  3. Go to the Web address page and if your Google Sites uses only one web address mapping then Google SItes sets it as your canonical URL by default: you need to do nothing therefore.

  4. Note: we strongly recommend you follow the steps in Google Sites - Get Found in Google Search - Google Webmaster Tools to ensure Google Search know about your chosen mapped web address.

  5. If your site uses more than one mapped web address then use the Set as canonical link next to the web address you want Google Search to use in the search engine result pages.

Google Apps Sites (sites.google.com/a/...)

  1. Sign in to the site you want to set the canonical URL for;

  2. Use the More button then Manage site (or the keyboard shortcut g then m);

  3. In the General section scroll down to the Canonical URI section and enter the web address you want Google Search to index as the canonical URI.

  4. Note: you need to enter a mapped web address that the site already uses in your Google Apps control panel: if you wish to use a new address then you first need to map this address correctly in Google Apps.

  5. We strongly recommend you follow the steps in Google Sites - Get Found in Google Search - Google Webmaster Tools to ensure Google Search know about your chosen mapped web address.

  6. If you want to change or clear the canonical URI then enter a different mapped web address or delete the URL in the Canonical URI box.

  7. Use the red Save button to send live the canonical URL.
