Large Images - Resize on Upload

Google Sites resizes large content (foreground) images on upload to 1600px stored for reuse and displayed at 1175px wide

Google Sites no longer resizes background images since the introduction of Cover page header

Image 1

Uploaded at 1920px wide - Google Sites resized to store at 1600px but displayed at 1175px - Displayed at full width

Image 2

Uploaded at 480px wide - Google Sites did not resize so width remains 480px and displayed at full width, so stretched and pixelated

Image 3 (copied and pasted Image 1)

Uploaded at 1920px wide - Google Sites resized to store at 1600px - Displayed at 50% width

Since the display size is reduced Google Sites makes a dynamic size alteration to 50% of the site width (572px) but if this image is copied and pasted again it retains its full quality (see image 4 below).

Image 4 (copied and pasted Image 3)

Uploaded at 1920px wide - Google Sites resized to store at 1600px but displayed at 1175px - Displayed at 100% width

Since the high resolution image 1 was copied and pasted to image 3 and then copied and pasted to image 4 the highest resolution Google Sites resizes too (1175px) was used so no loss in image quality even though it was copied and pasted from image 3 that's displayed at 50% width.
